Stylish and Massively High Scoring Bordeaux
Today we have two red Bordeaux on offer from the powerhouse Château Haut-Bailly. If you're a fan of Bordeaux then you will no doubt recognize the importance of this producer. Only small quantities are brought into the state and we're pleased to say we were allocated both tiers of their very special wine.
Both of Haut-Bailly's wines are collector's items and both are massively high scoring wines as you'll soon find out.
La Parde Haut-Bailly Bordeaux 2017
"Spice and wood flavors are dominant in this wine at this stage although the fragrant fruit also shines through. It has fine juicy blackberry notes and softly integrated tannins. In the end, it is all about the great fruitiness." (Wine Enthusiast)

"A blend of 65% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, brought up in 30% new French for 12 months, the 2017 La Parde Haut-Bailly is another charming, classic, high-quality wine that I'd be happy to drink. Ripe black cherries, blackberries, leafy herbs, tobacco leaf, and a kiss of loamy soil all emerge from the glass, and it's medium-bodied, has plenty of fruit, a good spine of acidity, and a clean finish. It's already delicious yet will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and evolve for over a decade." (Jeb Dunnuck)

"Charming and elegant, the rich blueberry fruit has good density, even if its not particularly generous. The tannins close the fruit down but have life and definition in them, and this will soften and open within four to five years. There was 30% frost in the vineyard, but no second generation fruit was used - in fact, they didn't even have any. The blend has a little more Merlot than usual. 30% of production was used for La Parde, and around 20% for the estate's third wine." (Decanter Magazine)

Château Haut-Bailly Grand Cru Classe Pessac-Leognan 2017
"The 2017 Haut-Bailly is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it has a wonderfully spicy nose of cinnamon stick, cloves, anise and fenugreek with core of roses, warm blueberries, black forest cake and black raspberries plus hints of underbrush and iron ore. Medium to full-bodied with firm, ripe, grainy tannins, it has oodles of freshness and great finesse, continuing bright and energetic on the long, minerally finish." (Wine Advocate)

"This reminds me of 2001 more than most wines I've tasted, and perhaps it's no surprise that a vintage that required a skilful touch and a belief in the power of elegance should do well at Haut-Bailly. It's hugely pure and restrained, with great aromatics and extremely well placed bilberry, cassis and mulberry fruits. The tannins are fine and poised, set against cigar box with touches of charcoal and slate. They build through the palate, but remain slightly austere on the finish, with a bounce to them that suggests they are going to age beautifully. They kept the vineyard team for three weeks in July, because the vines kept throwing out green shoots after the June rains. Harvested 13-29 September, the vines were around two weeks ahead all the way through the season. The yield was 28hl/ha overall, but only 2hl/ha on the frosted parts, compared to 40hl/ha for the unaffected areas, 50% of production going into the grand vin. Malo was finished by the end of November, but the vats are still separated and there will be final blend in May 2018 (which is what they always do). 4% of Cabernet Franc finishes the blend given below." Dark cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, new leather, incense, and grilled herb overtones infuse the 2017 with striking layers of nuance, but it is the wine's feel that really elevates it into the realm of Pessac-Léognan's best. "A dry wine firm with dark tannins, this is destined for long aging. Concentration and a solid structure are balanced by the dusty texture and dry core. It will take a while for the potential of the juicy black fruits to come through, so this wine needs to wait until 2024." (Wine Enthusiast)

It reveals a medium ruby hue as well as a classic, medium-bodied, elegant yet also ripe style that's common in the vintage. With medium body, ripe, polished tannins, beautiful elegance and purity, and a great finish, it's a terrific wine in the vintage that will drink well for 25-30 years." (Jeb Dunnuck)

"A bold tarry note coils around the core of plum, black currant and blackberry fruit, while licorice root and bramble details check in on the finish. Packed and grippy, this is a touch rustic in profile at this early stage but should unwind easily enough with time, as all the pieces are in place. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2023 through 2038. 4,166 cases made." (Wine Spectator)
