The best rosé of the season just arrived and it's September! We have zero problem with that for three reasons:
(1) we drink rosé year round;
(2) rosé is incredibly scarce right now and many are gone until 2021 so it's definitely time to stock up;
(3) our exquisite rosé today is made from Nebbiolo (the powerhouse grape in Barolo and Barbaresco) so it has structure and depth in addition to elegance and refinement. In other words, it's PERFECT for Autumn!!!
This just happened on the deck yesterday and we both said the exact same thing -- "this is the best rosé of the year hands down!". Strong praise from these two hard core rosé fans.
Let's start with the winemaker, none other than Roberto Conterno, a Barolo LEGEND who is known as the jewel in Piedmont's greatest crown. Conterno acquired Gattinara's venerable Nervi estate in 2018.
Nervi is an historic benchmark vineyard in Gattinara with some of the most prized holdings in the entire appellation. It's also the oldest winery in Gattinara which is still producing. While Roberto had not been actively seeking to purchase a new winery, the opportunity to obtain such an historic estate with benchmark vineyard holdings of Nebbiolo was too good to pass up. After all, he is the King of Nebbiolo.
Stunning historic vineyard + legendary Barolo producer = one VERY SERIOUS ROSATO.
This Rosato is made using grapes from some of Nervi's top crus which you would expect to be saved for their top red bottlings. You could easily drink this Rosato with any food you would serve with top shelf Barolo. Please let that sink in. We also recommend not serving it too cold.
