Fans of Italy, it's time for a pop quiz. How many vineyard estates are there in the DOC of Pomino in Tuscany?
You might be surprised to learn there are only two. During the 17th and 18th centuries, England and France were frequently at war which meant England would be cut off from its favorite wine Claret (aka Bordeaux) periodically. Finding a substitute was of paramount importance because the Brits really dig their Claret and they weren't willing to carry on fighting without a bit of tipple.
They ventured south and found their substitute in Tuscany, creating significant revenue for Chianti and other Tuscan wine estates. The revenue was such that the Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici, ruler of Tuscany for more than 50 years beginning in 1670, instituted decrees to define which vineyard sites in his realm were allowed to produce its best wines.
One of these zones was Pomino.
While Pomino is the name of the current wine appellation, the Pomino region defined by Cosimo III was much larger -- essentially the same as the entire Rùfina subzone of the Chianti DOCG today.
It is here in Rùfina where the winery Selvapiana produces stunning wines, including its world class Chianti Rùfina Riserva Bucerchiale. Selvapiana also owns one of the only two winery estates in Pomino (the other is Frescobaldi) and it's a great off-the-radar value.
Selvapiana Villa Petrognano Pomino (DOC) 2017 (Tuscany, Italy)
The Villa Petrognano vineyards are planted with Sangiovese, along with a significant amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which are blended into this modern Bordeaux style wine which still respects tradition.
If you enjoy the structure and depth of Bordeaux then you should definitely get on board this train. This wine is delicious and easily drinks like twice its price.
"The sweet, smoky aroma of burning vine cuttings introduces this enticing red. Black cherry and black currant flavors are framed by cedar, pencil shavings, tar and tobacco. It firms up in the end, with beefy tannins and a lingering savory finish. Best from 2022 through 2035. 600 cases made, 250 cases imported." (Wine Spectator)
