Candidate For Best White Wine of the Year
Today's wine is a leading candidate for BEST WHITE WINE OF THE YEAR.
In other words, if you're going to purchase one white wine this summer, we think it should be this one. Strong words, yes, but we absolutely mean it.
Case in point. Whenever we're invited to dinner with wine industry colleagues we think very carefully about which wines we're going to bring. Last night we went to just such a dinner. Of all the wines available to us we decided to bring the Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre 2015. We knew there would be much more expensive wines at the table but we really didn't care. Our confidence in this wine was that strong.
As it turns out, our Sancerre was the star of the evening and it fared much better than a rare $125/bottle of wine. First of all, the label is a knockout. Everyone commented on how much they loved the packaging (wine labels matter to wine geeks like album cover art matters to music lovers).
One sip and the table went quiet. We looked around, curious. Did we make a mistake? Was it the wrong choice for this discriminating and somewhat jaded table of wine professionals who have tasted everything under the sun? Should we have brought something more expensive? We weren't picking up on any responses right away so our heads went spinning.
And then everyone smiled at the same time. "Wow, that's incredible." "This is amazing wine." "Woah." "That is stunning."
And now for our dynamic little white wine.
Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre 2015
Hippolyte Reverdy's family has been making wine in the charming village of Verdigny, a commune of Sancerre in the eastern Loire, for many generations — perhaps as far back as 1600.
The famous wine importer Kermit Lynch began working with the domaine for the first time in 1983. After tasting a Sancerre from the domaine, Kermit asked Michel Reverdy to craft one for him in the traditional demi-muids, and specified that he would like it unfiltered.
Kermit now says that Reverdy has since "become the benchmark domaine of our day."
"Very pure Sancerre aroma, generous, fresh, without grassy edges. The palate is expansive, then the nervosity makes its appearance and the finish is dry and lip smackingly good. One of the things I love about it is that it leaves on the lips, not the palate, not the throat, but on your lips, a fresh little lemony whisper which makes it a fabulous complement to simple fish dishes." -- Kermit Lynch
It's challenging to find a more refreshing, yet elegant white wine than Sancerre and this benchmark Sancerre is a real game changer. At least for us.
There is perhaps no better match for oysters than a mineral-driven Sancerre from one of the best producers in the entire region.
This release is always a cut above textbook Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc, with bright acidity, buoyancy, citrus and grass notes. This is a bright, delicate, and stunning expression of Sauvignon Blanc grown on Kimmeridgian chalk.
Get some now. You'll be very happy about it.
$27.99/bottle or $268.70/12 pack case ($22.39/bottle) or just $22.39/bottle in a mixed case of wine. Trust us, it's worth every dime and a whole lot more.
* UPDATE * *UPDATE * *UPDATE *
We've been waiting for this white wine to arrive for months. The 2015 vintage arrived a few days ago. We're now watching the inventory like a hawk. Two days ago there were 100 cases in inventory at the wholesaler. In one single day half of it vanished.
So we're very sorry to say this may be a one shot deal. We'll do our best to keep this wine in stock for as long as we possibly can, but it isn't looking very good. When you find a sensational knock-out like this everyone wants it. Plus it's the quintessential summer white wine and Boston is doing its best to wipe it off the face of the earth.
We have a small amount of this wine in inventory right now and more arriving on Friday. If you don't get yours right now then please email or call the store to reserve whatever you can for our next (and perhaps last) delivery.
