93 Point Italian Red Under $13.00!
Points from wine critics are definitely not everything when enjoying wine, but we find that they offer a great starting point to experience something impressive. When we found a wine that normally sells for $16.00 scored 93 points with Wine Spectator we took immediate notice and requested a sample.
We tend to be partial to old world wines and I personally always enjoy the alluring appeal of Italian wines, especially those special Sangiovese based wines from Tuscany and Umbria. They tend to offer a beautiful versatility and their true impressive qualities shine through when paired with food, whether it be Italian cuisine or not. The Monsanto Monrosso 2015 offered exactly what we expected and so much more.
For anyone who has had the good fortune to visit Italy and the wonderful wineries that fill the country it becomes obvious that passion, tradition and love of the land are similar threads that connect many of the family owned vineyards. Monsanto is an excellent example of this and it all started with Aldo Bianchi in 1960 when he returned home to Tuscany. He set his sights near Colle di Val d'Elsa, a picturesque hill town, and Castello di Monsanto whose beautiful views were matched by the wines the land could produce. His son Fabrizio planted many new vineyards while converting many of the farmhouses to serve the creation of their future wines. Since then, the family has put the full force of tradition and passion into making their wines the best they possibly can be.
